Profile: Rubeena practises predominantly in the criminal defence field. She has extensive experience of all types of hearings within the Crown and Magistrates Courts.
Recently she represented the first defendant in a four hander burglary trial resulting in her client's acquittal (R v Sheen 2005). In the case of R v Buttegieg (2006) only a conditional discharge was given for possession of a bladed article.
Rubeena is particularly experienced in representing vulnerable clients including youths and those with mental disorders.
In addition to her own cases, she has given substantial assistance to Leading Counsel in cases of murder, rape, serious violence, drugs and fraud (including on-line e-banking and corporate). Notably, R v Alim and others (2005) (defending Siddik) - murder, multi-hander, interracial violence where the defendant was acquitted. In R v Abdul Shahid (2005) - rape where the defendant was acquitted.
In the family law sphere, Rubeena has dealt with child contact, divorce and ancillary relief matters. Rubeena is also well conversant in private international law relating to Muslim marriage (nikkah), divorce (talaq), dower (mahr), guardianship and all other matters incidental to this area of law. She is particularly devoted to and well read in Shariah Law as practised all over the Muslim world.
Rubeena regularly attends the Immigration Tribunals dealing with issues of political asylum, appeals and sector-based scheme applications.
Work covered within the civil area has included possession hearings and debt recovery.
Importantly, Rubeena does extensive Human Rights work abroad. She has recently returned as part of a delegation visiting the Maldives and Sri Lanka (2005).
Rubeena is a member of Chambers' Marketing Committee and is the Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety Officer.
In addition, she has undertaken the responsibility of Joint Secretary of the Commonwealth in England Bar Association for 2006.
Rubeena has worked as a clerk for a solicitors' firm and has worked as a barristers' clerk before qualifying as a barrister.
Rubeena successfully completed the Keble College Oxford South Eastern Circuit Advanced Advocacy Course 2006.
Interests: Rubeena was recently invited to become a committee member of the international children's charity 'HOPE' and looks forward to visiting and assisting on foreign projects. She has also been invited to attend an International Interfaith Dialogue at a conference in Dhaka later this year held by the International Institute of Islamic Thought.
As gardening is a passion she is hoping to soon become part-time assistant to the Head Gardener of Inner Temple. She also enjoys all creative arts including fine art, (she has designed the current Chambers' Logo) cinema and theatre. She is keen on developing TV/Film documentaries on various global social, economic, political, religious and environmental issues.
Music is a keen interest of Rubeena's. She has sung in various choirs and bands and regularly writes lyrics. Learning to play the clarinet at an early age Rubeena has performed in many ensembles and orchestras and continues to play in her spare time.
Languages: Rubeena is conversant in French, Urdu and Bengali. She also reads and writes Arabic.
