Profile: Crime; Paul undertakes mainly Defence criminal work daily in Crown Courts throughout London and the South East including the Old Bailey. His experience takes in all areas of crime, ranging from offensive weapons, sex, drugs and violence to Fraud / MTIC and confiscation proceedings.

Notable recent cases include:
  • R v Kiwanuka (11) – Cocaine importation – Estimated to have a street value of £800,000, the cocaine was intercepted by customs at Stansted airport. The onward delivery address in Barking, London, led the police to cause for the forensic interrogation of mobile phone data. The evidence against the defendant comprised phone/text logs and was supported by extensive cell site analysis covering a period of weeks.
  • R v Proudfoot (11) – High Value Theft – This case involved an allegation of theft of circa £100,000 of Champagne in a diversion heist from a lorry carrying the goods from Hungary. The case against the defendant comprised, DNA, Identification evidence, and incorporated Abuse of Process argument as to missing CCTV.
  • R v Coker (11)- Underage Sex – Paul represented defendant at Old Bailey accused of having sex with a child of 14. The evidence comprised, DNA and alleged confession and necessitated several applications to stay proceedings.
  • R v Hatton (11) – Drug Production – Granted a certificate for two counsel, Paul led in this case involving the alleged production of drugs in an industrial unit. The matter involved issues of fitness to stand trial and the admissibility of evidence at trial adduced by a psychiatrist pre-trial, as to the substantive offending.
  • R v Biggs (11) – GBH – allegation of Saturday night street violence in central London.
  • R v Court (10) – Junior Defence Counsel, led for First Defendant in a 6 handed 3 ½ month multi-million pound VAT Fraud/MTIC trial, acquitted on 2 of 4 counts. Case involved detailed forensic analysis of bank accounts, audit trails, close scrutiny of 1000s of pages of unused material and the dynamic of co-defendants comprising family and ex-employees in a cut throat defence with a missing chair co-conspirator.
  • R v Court (10) – Confiscation Proceedings. Successfully negotiated a £500,000 reduction in realisable assets sought by the Crown.
  • R v Matthews (10) – Youth ABH, Appeal to the Crown Court from Youth Court and subsequent Judicial Review Proceedings at the Royal Courts of Justice on matter as to correctness of need to serve sentence pending appeal.
  • R v Wasti (09)– GBH – allegation of frenzied knife attack to face.
  • R v Moore (09) – ABH – Young lady; student, accused of ‘glassing’ another in a nightclub.
  • R v Cooper (09) – Possession with intent, Class A –Delivery driver found to be in possession of over half a million pounds worth of drugs in a holdall in the back of van.
Immigration; As part of his practice, Paul has extensive experience before the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal at all levels/tiers, including High Court.

Paul’s interests, other than Manchester United (born in Manchester!), comprise racquet sports, cricket, reading and enjoying time with his wife and children.
