Profile: James Dick has substantial experience in the Crown Court as well as in the Court of Appeal and the High Court. He deals with allegations involving amongst other things serious violence, sexual assaults and child abuse, drugs and financial crimes.
Having completed an undergraduate degree in physics, Mr Dick is undaunted by cases involving complex scientific or statistical evidence. - Defendant accused of taking a man’s mobile telephone on the street who accepted in interview and in evidence that he had “beaten him up”, acquitted of robbery – Inner London Crown Court, 2011.
- Defendant acquitted on one count of s 18 wounding with intent following submissions on quality of complainant’s evidence – Harrow Crown Court, 2011.
- Defendant captured on CCTV camera assaulting hotel receptionist behind a till acquitted of robbery – Snaresbrook Crown Court, 2011.
- Defendant acquitted on charge of serious sexual assault upon a woman semi-conscious through drink – Norwich Crown Court, 2010.
- Defendant of good character (family friend of instructing solicitor’s clerk) acquitted on charge of ABH – Wood Green Crown Court, 2010.
Notable cases in the higher courts:

Successfully defended Kent CPS in an application for judicial review of the decision to prosecute a 12 year-old boy who required an intermediary for assault with intent to rob – R (C) v Sevenoaks Youth Court and others [2010] 1 All ER 735, 2009 EWHC 3088 (Admin).
- Appeared pro bono and granted leave to appeal sentence of five years’ imprisonment for possession of heroin with intent to supply – R v Underwood, Court of Appeal, 2011.
- Appellant was a 14 year-old boy who had originally been charged with rape. His sentence of imprisonment under s 91 PCC(S)A 2000 was reduced on appeal to a community order – Court of Appeal, 2009.
- Appellant’s IPP reduced on appeal to a four-year sentence with extended licence period – R v Elson, Court of Appeal, 2010.
